196: ANDREW JOHNSON – FROM RAGS TO RICHES ON ‘HAIL TO THE CHIEF’

Andrew Johnson never attended school a day in his life. Yet through hard work, determination, and an assassin’s bullet, the once upon a time tailor became the 17th President of the United States.

Over the past few years, my photographer and I have visited numerous sites associated with Johnson. I’ve been to his birthplace in Raleigh, North Carolina; his homestead in Greeneville, Tennessee; and the home where he died in Elizabethton, Tennessee. But most importantly, our story talks about a man who grew up poor and he could barely read and write when he got married at the age of 18. But once he got a taste of education with the help of his wife Eliza, there was no stopping Andrew Johnson’s rise to the top. He was a public servant most of his adult life – by the time he was 35 years old, Johnson was elected as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Johnson was also elected the 15th Governor of Tennessee, the 16th Vice President of the United States, and thanks to John Wilkes Booth, the 17th President of our nation. Following his time in the White House, Johnson was elected as a United States Senator; and he was serving in that capacity when he died at the age of 66.

While Andrew Johnson was most famous for being the first President impeached, I like to think of him as a man who worked hard – he was the main character in the true American rags to riches story. Please click on the link below and see Andrew Johnson’s story come to life on our show ‘Hail to the Chief’ from GBS Studios in Port Huron, Michigan.

Thomas Watson

My name is Thomas Watson and I've been a U.S. history fanatic since I was 9 years old. In 2013, I decided to take my passion to the next level when I purchased a Thomas Jefferson bobble head with the sole intention of photographing that bobble head at Presidential sites. From that first day on July 10, 2013 at Spiegel Grove in Fremont, Ohio, this journey has taken on a life of its own. Now, nearly 40,000 miles later, I thought it was time to share the experiences, stories, and photos of Jefferson's travels. Keep in mind, this entire venture has been done with the deepest respect for the men who held the office as our President; no matter what their political affiliations, personal ambitions, or public scandals may have been. This blog is intended to be a true tribute to the Presidents of the United States and this story will be told Through the Eyes of Jefferson. I hope you enjoy the ride!
