It once was said “Life is a bowl of cherries”. For President Zachary Taylor, however, death may have been a bowl of cherries instead. That’s right – when our 12th President Zachary Taylor was in attendance at a Fourth of July fundraiser near the Washington Monument in 1850, the hungry Commander-In-Chief ate a bowl of cherries and washed them down with some cold ice milk. Five days later, Old Rough and Ready was dead from an intestinal ailment. He became the second President to die in office.
That story, and a lot more information about Taylor, is shared by my photographer on our show ‘Hail to the Chief’. The latest episode, which was published three days ago and spotlights the life and times of Zachary Taylor, can be found by clicking on the link below. Individual episodes about all the Presidents prior to Taylor, from George Washington to James K. Polk, can also be found in the Entertainment section at BWHL.
